Charleston, S.C. — In August 2011, an earthquake registering a magnitude of 5.8 rattled the state of Virginia. The force of such a strong earthquake was felt across more than a dozen U.S. states, including South Carolina.
At Grace Episcopal Church in Charleston, the earthquake weakened the limestone mortar holding bricks in the walls together and made it unsafe for church members to worship there. Mashburn Construction was hired to stabilize the walls to allow the congregation to re-occupy the sanctuary while the project moves into Phase 2, which brings the entire structure up to IBC Code compliance.
