Agape Main Street Complex
Columbia, SC
When Agape Senior Care wanted to relocate their corporate offices to Columbia’s Main Street, they teamed with Mashburn Construction in a unique and challenging endeavor. The 43,000 square foot Agape Main Street Complex included the historic renovation and restoration of three dilapidated buildings on Main Street for the senior health care provider. The mixed-use development now provides premium office, retail and healthcare space in the heart of downtown.
Agape’s Corporate Office & Conference Center encompasses 23,000 square feet of the Complex. Numerous historic features were preserved, restored and/or reused, including: full terra cotta façade; original steel windows; hardwood floors; tin ceilings and cornice; and plaster finishes. Additional windows that had once been blocked-in were also uncovered and restored. New features were incorporated that were consistent with the original materials and design such as wood and aluminum storefronts, storefront signage, and retractable awnings. Rear entry features were upgraded with modern amenities that represented the historical architecture with contemporary materials including a full rear curtain wall and entry vestibule; metal Alucobond panels; and a fully landscaped and fenced courtyard with stained, stamped concrete walk ways.
This project was honored with the Historic Preservation Award for Excellence in Adaptive Use by the Historic Columbia Foundation, as well as the Preservation Honor Award by SC Historic Preservation.
