College of Charleston Randolph Hall, Porter’s Lodge and Towell Library

Charleston, SC

This was a historic renovation to the exterior of the three oldest buildings surrounding the Cistern: Randolph Hall, Towell Library and Porter’s Lodge. Each building was more than 150 years old and they are all listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The goal was to conduct structural repairs while restoring and preserving the exterior elements and maintaining the historic characteristics of each building. Our team worked effectively and efficiently to minimize disruptions for both locals and visitors of the area. Only historically appropriate materials were used during the renovations, which included structural repairs, roofing repairs, treatments for the wooden window frames and shutters, stone masonry, terra cotta capitals, brick masonry, stucco, ornamental iron and paint finishes. The terra cotta capitals on Randolph Hall’s south portico were handcrafted in Massachusetts and are the earliest pieces of architectural terra cotta in the country, dating back to 1850.
