Grand Bohemian Hotel
Charleston, SC
The Grand Bohemian Hotel is a new, 57,125 square foot, Four Diamond hotel in historic downtown Charleston, SC. The 50-room luxury boutique hotel includes a 1,100 square foot art gallery, wine blending and tasting room, fitness center, as well as a rooftop restaurant and terrace. The hotel also offers 3,000 square feet of meeting and event space, a café and a valet parking lot.
Wood beams and brick were taken from the original structure and reused as decorative features inside the new hotel. The Owner wanted the lighting to make a statement throughout the hotel, and specifically at the front desk to give it a “glowing” appearance. Thus, the design team specified numerous ways to do so, including installing 50,000 lumens of LED lighting around the front desk; adding a window in the express elevator so guests could view the exterior as they ride to the restaurant and bar area; installing a skylight in the center of the building to allow light into the interior guestrooms; and completely enclosing the top of the staircases in glass.
The hotel was constructed on a tight site on the corner of Meeting & Wentworth Streets. As the new hotel encompasses the entire property, very little lay down area was available during construction. Mashburn coordinated closely with the City of Charleston and neighboring businesses to do a lane closure on Wentworth Street for deliveries and lay down space. Mashburn also provided extensive value engineering ideas throughout the preconstruction process in order to meet the owner’s level of quality while also controlling costs.
This project was honored with the City of Charleston Award for Design Excellence.
