Mast General Store, Columbia

Columbia, SC

Mashburn completed this design-build renovation of a historical Columbia mixed-use building located in the heart of downtown on Main Street. The building is critically important to the Main Street revitalization vision and creates energy for future development.

Working closely with the ownership, the design team, Historic Columbia, and the South Carolina Department of Archives, our team was able to place the building on the Historic Registry. We also provided preconstruction consulting, design-assist and construction management.

Scope included extensive façade renovation, uncovering existing windows, custom built replacement windows, and storefront replacement to match the historic nature of the building in the 1920s. A new entrance courtyard provides a secondary entrance to Mast as well as a new, modern glass enclosed elevator allowing access to the upper floors.

This project has been honored with 4 awards: the Historic Preservation Award for Excellence in Preservation/Restoration by the Historic Columbia Foundation; the Merit Design Award by AIA Columbia; the Honor Award in Adaptive Reuse/Renovation by AIA South Carolina; and the Honor Award from the Brick Industry Southeast Region.
