Mast General Store, Winston Salem

This project was the historic renovation of a mixed-use building transformed a dilapidated building into premium retail and residential space; Mast General Store occupies the bottom two floors while the top two floors were renovated into 45 apartments. A common elevator is shared by the retail space and the apartment tenants.

To preserve the historic nature of the building, our team reused the existing wood floors and used re-claimed wood for the floors that were new so they would be of similar character as the existing.

We provided preconstruction services, design assistance and construction management. At the client’s request, we also assisted in establishing the security of the building.

Mindful consideration was used to prevent disruption to pedestrian and vehicular traffic as well as neighboring tenants during construction. The tight site presented a unique challenge of zero laydown space; material delivery scheduling was critical with this job, and our team also utilized storage areas inside the building.
