Nickelodeon Theater
Columbia, SC
The Nickelodeon Theatre, South Carolina’s only non-profit art house film theater, contracted with Mashburn Construction to renovate the former historic State Theatre into a new home for the Columbia Film Society and the Nickelodeon Theatre, Columbia’s only non-profit art house film theater. Mashburn worked extensively in pre-construction with the Board of Nickelodeon to bring this project into budget. Project scope included extensive demolition and rework of 10,000 SF theater building. Structural elements were shored up and brought to required code.
Phase 1 of the renovation provided space for the first of two theatres, which has world class audio/visual capabilities and includes digital and original methods of projection in order to recreate the film experience as originally viewed. The renovated lobby now houses restrooms, concession space, office, and storage space. Adjacent to the lobby is the projection booth and elevator. The façade of the Main Street entrance was refurbished and includes an upgraded curbside ticket booth. Located at the rear of the building is a Media Education Center in conjunction with the University of South Carolina; the Center helps young people learn about media and film. This project is an important key in the revitalization of Columbia, SC’s Main Street corridor.
This project was honored with the Historic Preservation Award for Excellence in Preservation/Restoration by the Historic Columbia Foundation.
