The Abbey at Pawleys Island

This church project was separated into two phases and involved an addition and renovations.

Phase One: 1,625 SF renovation of an existing building and demolition of old kitchen structure. The original building was built in 1972 as a clubhouse for a plantation community. In the early 2000’s, a restaurant purchased the property and added a kitchen building which we demolished to add the sanctuary. Mashburn removed the old locker rooms and sauna and added a family restroom and a nursery. The old main restrooms, a conference room and an old wine cellar were gutted and remodeled into new restrooms. Our team also renovated the old bar and library and transformed the old tennis courts into the main parking lot near the new main entry.

Phase Two: Construction of a new 3,766 SF Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) chapel. The roof structure was Timber trusses with laminated structural roof decking. Anderson Gothic Hurricane windows that were 18 and 32 feet tall at the gable ends were also installed. Raised panel interior columns with a patterned tile floor and custom church pews finished off the interior of the sanctuary.

The church was operational and held Sunday service during the entire 9-month project. Throughout the project, 10 mechanical units were switched out on a weekly basis, to ensure that the congregation had air conditioning every Sunday. Our team was able to deliver this project on time despite four drawing revisions during construction.
