The Honor Award is bestowed to those who have been involved in the preservation of historic buildings, structures, and sites within the last three years. Hosted annually, the South Carolina Historic Preservation Awards are a celebration of impactful historic projects by Preservation South Carolina, South Carolina Department of Archives and History, and the Office of the Governor.

Mashburn Construction collaborated with the Middleton Family (owner), Garvin Design Group (architect), and Rogers Lewis Jackson Mann Quinn LLC (historic consultant) to restore and renovate the buildings at 1639-1643 and 1645 Main Street. Constructed in the mid-19th century, the team utilized federal, state, and local tax credits to assist in the restoration of the cast iron columns, brick facades, storefronts, and window openings. Multiple spaces throughout the first floor of the 13,000-square-foot project retained historic features such as the beadboard, pressed tin ceilings, and plaster ceilings. Mashburn was able to restore the historic hardwood floors in the oyster bar, dining room, and vestibules, offsetting the mosaic tiles on the oyster bar and in the recessed entryways. The restaurant opens to a courtyard behind the development to provide a relaxing indoor-outdoor dining experience. Guests are met at their tables with lounge seating and umbrellas, which can be opened for shade. A prefabricated aluminum pergola mimics the gable roof of the addition, while operable roof fins provide selective closed cover.

Smoked encompasses a restaurant, oyster bar, underground speakeasy, and micro-brewery with apartments on the top floor. The artfully designed oyster bar was fitted with a unique skylight feature bringing additional light into the space. Mashburn carefully coordinated the delivery and installation of brewing equipment for Smoked’s in-house micro-brewery. The micro-brewery will serve a constant rotation of beers, ciders, seltzers, nitro coffee, and CBD water.

“Since 1976, Mashburn has led everything we do with our vision to be the builder of choice, the builder of people, and the builder of better communities. Our relationship with the Middleton’s, Garvin Design Group, and Rogers Lewis is a direct result of that vision. We have worked as team to restore numerous historic buildings along and around the Main Street, while simultaneously revitalizing the District’s community feel and creating new opportunities for a more cohesive live, work, and play concept,” says Lee Mashburn, President of Mashburn Construction Company, Inc.

Mashburn is continuing their relationship with Middleton Family through the construction of a full-service brewery on North Main Street. Peak Drift Brewing Co., is anticipated to be complete in the fall of 2023. Peak Drift’s brews can already be experienced at Smoked’s in-house micro-brewery.
